Ugh - the older I get, the less control I seem have over my mouth. Hence why I am here at FS - trying to control what I put IN it while the rest of my day I try to control what comes OUT of it. All I can conclude from the following experience is now I know why Don Rickles is still around.
I have signs posted throughout my store displaying 'no hands in pockets' but I am going to have to tweak them because even though there is a picture of a person with their hands in pockets and the universal big red 'no-no' circle & bar over the image for anyone who can't read English, some people will look at the sign and react by purposely shoving their hands into their pockets. It's as if the brain can only process the image but not the 'NO'. Weird.
Oh well, I've always said the human mind is my favorite playground. Much like telling ourselves 'I will not eat the Girl Scout Cookies' the brain only saw 'Cookies'.
Anyway, a man was in my earlier store with his wife & two young daughters and he read the sign and automatically did the pocket shove thing. I could tell by the 'fashionably tight jeans' that was 'all' he had in the pockets but to avoid some 'other' person coming back at me with a discrimination accusation I have to tell EVERYONE 'while you're in my store, I ask that you please remove your hands from your pockets'.
Most of the time the customer apologizes and removes their hands from their pockets. Some will look shocked, some will behave as if they are offended, and some start emptying their pockets. I tell them 'Stop, you don't have to take anything OUT, just don't put anything IN either.'
The guy this morning, though gave me a 'really... me?' look as he glanced at his wife and children but before I could stop myself I said:
'Yeah yeah, I know.. you're a family.. but so were the Mansons.'
Where in the world did THAT come from?
At THAT point I was able to clamp my mouth shut and stood, wide eyed, waiting for his ranting response. But apparently I had a closet masochist in the midst as he just chuckled and spent a heck of a lot of money with me.
God Bless ya Mr. Rickles; you paved the way for mouthy Bella's everywhere.
