Day two of the most inexplicable cravings set me about prowling the interweb in search of answers. Read this elsewhere just now: health experts believe that as your body (and gut) heals itself…even your cravings become healthier.

Interesting.

Yesterday I was crazy hungry all morning until I fulfilled the most ironic craving for mustard. While I attributed it to simply a mental reaction to journaling about it on Sunday I was intriqued to find: Since mustard is such a great benefit for digestion, it is possible your body actually knows that. Mustard has incredible properties. Mustard helps with digestion, and can also speed up metabolism. This is wonderful news for anyone who is looking for natural ways to help with weight loss. Of course, it is important to use the mustard as close to nature as possible, so look for healthy mustard in your health food store.

But I just found 'that' little info today. All I knew yesterday was that a bundle of celery and a half a cup of mustard later I was finally satisfied.

The sounds of square dancing in my abdomen warned me not to wander too far from a bathroom but I was otherwise okay. Obviously the mustard was doing it's business so I could do mine.

Today the craving was for, of all things: sauerkraut. I have not wanted this particular little dish for at least 35 years. How do I know 35 years? Because I practially lived on it for two weeks when I was a teenager.

So while munching down on the 'kraut today I did a search for the answer to these two weird cravings, hence the opening paragraph of this journal.

Regarding sauerkraut: Instead of paying a lot of money for a bottle of quality probiotics you can choose to consume foods that have been fermented. And, just to give you fair warning, they can become addicting. Our bodies often crave what we need. They also crave chocolate, beer, and hot dogs, but if given the opportunity, your gut will take over your brain and whisper sweet nothings (with a charming Southern accent) like “How about a little Kimchee?” or “Kefir, sounds mighty fine right about now.” And pretty soon, your kids will be looking at you like you’ve got four eyeballs because you’re eating sauerkraut for breakfast.

I especially liked thinking about that last part (kraut for breakfast) because after my feeding frenzy yesterday I was actually considering tuna for breakfast today. Tuna is my number one 'go-to' for fulfilling hunger and keeping the munch monster at bay for hours.

I toyed with the whole 'really, Bella... Tuna for breakfast?' to the point that I just ate the oatmeal but found myself, again, hungry w/in three hours and said 'that's it!' and had an ounce of tuna & an ounce of smoked salmon. The munch monster went back to sleep and I was able to concentrate on my morning.

When the 'kraut craving kicked in around noon ((haha, a lot of alliteration there, no?)) I decided to search as I munched. Two small bowls later and I'm no longer craving nor hungry. I feel satisfied.

Hmm... tuna and sauerkraut for breakfast anyone?

Now, before you all go out & buy stock in cabbage futures, I can't guarantee this will last. I'm just intrigued by the 'healthy' cravings and how when I shut up and listen my body will tell me what it wants.

Thank you for reading.
Bella

Hi Bella, hope you don't mind me piping in. I have been reading your journals for a while now & find them very interesting :). My favourite breakfast are steak & brokkoli, kippers & spinach, pork chop & cucumber. Basically any protein with something green. It sets me up for the day. Try to read 'clean & lean eating' , I think its by James Dugan, but not too sure. It just gave me some good pointers on how to eat. Its certainly worth a read. happy Hump day :)

Once again a wonderful lesson learned from my Angel! While I always suspected that what I craved meant something, it never occurred to me to actually google it! Think you just gave Dr Ruth the material for her next research study! xoxox

I have never heard of someone craving 'non sweet' things! But you honoured your cravings and thankfully the things you craved weren't high catb or high calories and your body obviously needed them. Kudos too on doing the research into what those cravings meant. When I look up cravings for chocolate and sweet I hear that my body is actually craving fat! who knew. When I first started Atkins/low carb, I didn't know what to eat for breakfast so I often had tuna and mayo (protein and fast). As you say we can eat what we like, when we like, there is no 'breakfast only' foods anymore. Your body is doing a good job in letting you know what it wants and you are doing an awesome jobn listening to it. Love your journals. You should think about making printint them now, before you get too many, print them each day, and then you could produce a book when you are doine - Mindful Eating by Bella.

@Colly - you realize I'm going to browse your food diary now for your weird food preferences, LOL. Yeah, greek yogurt & cottage cheese are my fav go-to's for protein when I don't feel like 'meat'. I laugh at that RDI pie chart all the time. Really... PIE? They should use a GRAPH so we don't think about PIE everytime we record our food. How crazy is THAT? @Evelyn - indeed - eating the basics without their unnecessary partners. I did, as I set about on my sauerkraut yesterday, make MH a Rueben sandwich, pumpernickle bread and all - but for me it was the 'kraut alone that was whispering to me so I was content. @Sharon - thank you and you are welcome. Yes, denying those cravings just get's worse. I remind myself satisfying a 'craving' isn't the same as resolving my hunger so to fulfill it I start with a simple spoonful or ONE taste and savor it, esp if it's like chocolate or a dessert. After all - every bite after the first is just a memory. It took some practice but day by day, I'm getting better at it. @Lady - thank you for the chicken stock instructions. If only I could come stay with you for a while, I bet I'd fall face first into one of your fabulous dishes and it'd be a week before I came up for air. @Schmettering - I don't mind at all. I am definitely interested in more protein less carb for breakfast so great idea. Have not read Dugan myself but seen many references to it. I may consider it if I ever finish some of the books I'm reading now. Stop by anytime. Thanks! @Angel - the craving google - I have read different 'reasons' at different sites, esp the one about cheese = morphine, but it's nice to know there's a reason our bodies are talking to us :-) @Jaime - thank you ~ I sure hope you're feeling better kid! @Isabel - awww - you are so kind but I am nothing but a poacher. Mindful eating is already published as well as everything I quote and share. I'm just pleased that some of it actually works for me. Ironically, reading the mindful eating book (Eat what you love) - while I've learned several really good techniques from it that I'll keep, I found myself actually frustrated when the author advised 'grain based diet, low cal this, low fat that' as it's the very thing that kept me messed up so many years. But again, I am taking her ideas as skills and moving on with it. I looked up chocolate craving at another site and it shared Chocolate craving was a result of a Magnesium deficiency that could be satisfied by raw cacao nibs/beans/powder, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, greens, and fruit. I've found 'spinach' usually depletes a craving for chocolate. Again, we all have to figure out what really works for our bodies. Thanks again everyone.
