My little hiatus experiment includes conquering that concern of having trigger foods in the house. Trying to wrap my head around making the best choices for myself regardless of the surroundings. Or BECAUSE of the surroundings.

Last night I baked a can of pillsbury grands. LOVE those. Every night when I have my decaff coffee w/hot froth'd milk I think 'man, a nice biscuit with butter would be great here' but I wouldn't because 'ohh.. the carbs... ohhh.. the night snacking... ohh.. the indulgence... ohh..the added weight'

But I decided last night 'do it, see what happens.' So I ate two instead of one. Not perfect. But I didn't eat all eight as I'd thought I would. And that was even with leaving the rest out on the counter (in a bag for freshness but not stuffing them in the freezer behind everything else.)

Progress. One day at a time.

Roth’s book mentions there are two types of people - those who crave salt (chips) and those who crave sugar but rarely both. I’m in the salt group. I know this. That’s why I wanted the biscuit.. for the butter.

On the other hand - I realized this weekend as I gave myself permission to order the ‘gourmet fries’ at a restaurant it wasn’t the fries I wanted.. it was the catsup. The sugar in the tomatoes.

So what’s the answer? Go straight to the source on the next craving without using the whole bus as the vehicle?? Sit around with a stick of salted butter and a bottle of catsup? And mustard - another ‘salt’ satisfier. Peanut butter for the sugar and salt.

Or just have the biscuit and move on?

I’m making less of a production of my home meals. I know this goes against everything ‘mindful’ but I’m working on ‘eating when hungry’ and just satisfying that. One or two bites of something I’ve already prepared and is ready in the fridge.

I'm mindfully eating enough to not feel hungry but the whole sit down, plate and thing.. I feel I have worked on identifying true hunger for a while now. I have also worked portions and satisfying hunger mindfully. I AM paying attention to the wonderful Colossal Spanish Olive in my mouth .. tasting it, chewing it, thinking about it, as I fold clothes. I can do both.

And if I find a time where I am thinking ‘I want food’ but not feeling hungry .. I am addressing that. I didn’t even think about food yesterday until after 4pm. I’d just been busy with other things.

So that’s what’s going on with me. Thank you for your patience, care, and support as I work thru this next route on my path to a healthier life. I carry all of you with me throughout the day and think about you. And when I pray … you’re all on the list.

Bells

Wildly waving my hand in the air when you said chips/salt. So, instead of going for the pantry and the chips... yes, there is a level in Dante's inferno for those of us who gorge on chips (and donuts), I will go for a kosher pickle or olive. Love learning. Thanks Bells.

Sweet or Salty... hmmm. I think I'm a sweet girl for sure, but not opposed to binging on salty in the event that sweet is not available. Beggars can't be choosey, am I right? lol My cravings are less about flavor and more about just shoving food down my gullet, doesn't really matter what it is.... although I've never binged on broccoli. I try not to make a big production over meals because I am trying to learn to eat to satisfy hunger rather than focusing so much attention on food. Some days are better than others of course, but progress. Love your cartoons, especially the dear diary one... so me. Happy to hear from you, stay well :) Much love, Bella.

hmmm I think I am "it depends on the day of the week and what is on offer girl"...call me easy....I go for both! I just love food - salty or sweet, so this has been a huge learning curve on curbing binges...and every time I think I have it sorted.....something yummy comes along. I think this is more about making better choices most of the time and forgiving yourself of the little hiccups....but getting yourself back on track as soon as the hiccup is over....

I'm addicted to sugar. I find that depriving myself of it just makes me want it more. So my thought would be...just eat the biscuit and move on.

Argh!! You've got me thinking about olives now - I LOVE olives! Glad to see you're thinking about what makes you happy, what you crave and what you're using as an excuse. That's a hard task in itself. My Dietitian friend says there's no such thing as a bad food, just a bad diet (and she makes the richest, dreamiest, most indulgent triple chocolate brownies I've ever come across). Keep smiling :-D

I have a problem avoiding sugar in forms of cake, ice cream, chocolate, etc. You know the normal sugar junkie choices. But if someone told me I had to eat either cake all day or pizza all day I would choose pizza (and yes please add fries). I've tried the cake only diet before and a day after eating cake feels terrible, LOL! I love the deeper message of paying attention to what we are really hungry for or what we in some cases are just ignoring. Thanks for sharing.

Angel, I see such progress and learn so much from each of your journals. What a wonderful reminder that we're each on our own journey and the path twists & turns and changes many times along the way. Yours keeps steadily advancing and it's such an inspiration! xoxox

I am a sugar girl, but salt is good to. Chocolate is my vice of choice. Not chocolate cake only chocolate as a bar. Funny. I can pass up chocolate icecream, chocolate brownies, even hot chocolate (sometimes) but chocolate bars. I find it amazing that you can identify what is you crave ie sugar in the ketchup or salt from the butter. I just can't narrow it down, hell I can't even identify the craving most of the time, just EAT and EAT NOW. Bells, I love sharing your journey with you and love that we are all with you all the same. Same goes for you too. I think about you often, wonder how you are doing, etc, and how the wretched out-laws are treating you. Love the cartoons as always.

I'm a salty salty gal. :) I have so many friends that can NOT understand why I always turn down cake, brownies, cookies, ice cream, whatever. I get it. It tastes good. I will have a bite. But I don't like to eat things that are too rich and I tell my friends, honestly, for the same amount of calories I'd rather have nachos and pizza. :p

P.S. I am torn on the 'mindful meals' idea as well. If I make a big production for 'dinner' I feel pressured to eat it all. When I am busy and whatnot and just eating for fuel/because I'm hungry I don't feel the need to eat as much, if that makes any sense.

Thanks everyone - you know, reading your comments it occurred to me one of my most favorite oh my yes foods is the recent surge of 'chocolate with sea salt'. So NOW I'm playing 'conspiracy theory' that someone else read this long ago and went 'well, heck... we know how to get those folks on the fence between salty & sweet...we'll give 'em BOTH. But then again, wasn't that the thing we love about REESES.. the salty peanut butter with chocolate. Or chocolate covered peanuts. So I guess it isn't new. Just seems so. Ok, I'll calm down and climb off my soap box. Carry on, LOL.

Kettle corn and beer. I love it.

Is kettle corn the same as cracker jacks?

Much better. Softer and not as hard and crunchy. My fav was at the Ocean where they made it on the Boardway and it was still warm. Get a bucket of it and give it a try. Yummy on the tummy.

This is hysterical. We're all talking about the forbidden fruits of our lives. The very things that put us on this site. lmao A desperately needed laugh.

How did I get so overweight leading such a sheltered culinary life as to have never had kettle corn? Does it come in Reese's flavor?
2014년 05월 29일 작성이: FullaBella
Kettle corm is sweet and salty popcorn... and is a-maze-ing... in my opinion. Doesnt come in any reese flavor that im aware of... but it would go together well lol
